Water Damage vs. Flood Damage
Why the distinction matters and how policies commonly treat each differently.
Editorial status: draft — awaiting expert review. General information only.
The difference
Flooding generally refers to surface water from outside — overflowing bodies of water, storm surge or runoff. Water damage often refers to water released inside, like a burst pipe.
Why it matters
Standard homeowners policies commonly exclude flood. Flood coverage is often purchased separately through the NFIP or private insurers. Only your actual policies determine what applies.
What to do
Gather all your policies and ask your agent which ones may respond to your loss.
