Working with insurers
How the Home Insurance Claims Process Generally Works
An overview of the typical stages of a property claim. Your policy and state rules control the details.
Editorial status: draft — awaiting expert review. General information only.
1. Reporting the loss
You notify your insurer, often by phone, app or agent. You'll usually receive a claim number.
2. Assignment and contact
An adjuster working for the insurer is assigned to review the claim and may contact you to schedule an inspection.
3. Inspection and documentation
The adjuster may inspect the property and request photos, receipts, estimates or an inventory.
4. Estimate and decision
The insurer evaluates the claim under the policy terms and communicates its decision and any payment.
5. Repairs and follow-up
Repairs proceed. Some policies pay in stages, for example an initial actual cash value payment followed by additional amounts after repairs are completed.
Keep records throughout
